Our in-house Interior Design expert Kerena BerryDesignbx shares her insight into the emerging Trends for 2020.  This year will see a pull toward more dynamic and stimulating interiors.  Iterations of each of the below trends will transpire across various styles; Boho, Luxe, Coastal, the rules are being pushed, and more than ever styles are being bled together in an individually creative manner. It’s time to release those creative juices!

GEO UNION

In a constantly changing and dynamic world we are trending towards paying closer attention to the earth’s surface- the changes, causes and effects. We will continue to evolve and take a finer look at how we influence the environment and the results of our lifestyles.  In this heightened awareness we will start the blend with our surroundings, drawing on integrating textures of clay, concrete, minerals, foliage and rock sediments through pattern and prints. The palette is a meridian of neutral earth tones. “Fabric and wallpaper applications will be the hero elements for this trend’ BerryDesignbx

FINE OPTIMISM

This season sees a yearning for something comforting and pleasing.  A celebration of the past and evolving it with the new. Antique aesthetics, french textiles and unobtrusive print and patterns.  Colours are delicate sun faded and organic tones. This is a bright happy space.

Berry says “Layering is key here. A fan of colours and patterns can comfortably share a single space, however, a similar tonal range will be the key element to ensure a refined design”

COUTURE BOHEMIAN

Inspired by the desire for expression and creativity, pulling from the free spirited lifestyle of artists, philosophers and writers.  “ This is one style we have seen a huge influx in our projects over the last 6 months. Australian’s are welcoming richer tones and heavier fabrics into the home and commercial spaces”- Berry.

We look to focus on an eclectic style of gilded neutrals, deep saturated jewel tones overlayed with considerate and detailed bohemian patterns. “Embracing the idea that “More is more”, colour, texture and pattern clash adding a daring twist with theatrical drama” Globewest

2020 sees us taking everything up to the next level. Colour, texture, prints and patterns being pushed to surprise. A little piece of the past, future and present all colliding to create familiar yet challenging new designs – almost anything goes!

“It is refreshing to foremost see variety. A beautiful layering of modern techniques, with old era soul, and consideration and pull to nature’s forms and tones.” Kerena Berry Designbx

There’s a common misconception that luxurious interiors are only possible with outlandishly priced feature pieces. We’ve put together a guide on how to create more a practical version of luxe by design than expensive labels and lavish purchases.

Colour, lighting and layout are criminally overlooked devices that every skilled interior designer uses effectively to convey an atmosphere of sophistication and excess. Let’s highlight five brilliant ways to give your rooms an air of extravagance with practical luxe interior design without maxing out your credit card.

1. Dark and mysterious

The experts always tell you to use white if you want to open up a space and make any room seem larger, but is the appearance of size your primary concern? Maybe intimacy is what you’re after, and sophisticated spaces are always designed with comfort in mind. So why not break away from the norm and opt for a more daring colour scheme?

Changing the upholstery or wall colour to a dark-hued tone will instantly add richness. Burgundy and midnight blue are two stylish tones guaranteed to wow your housemates and guests. Even black, when used sparingly, can give interiors different dimensions, adding an area of seclusion without sacrificing space. The best part about darker colours is the way they make your existing belongings pop.

2. Restyle the walls

What you decide to place on your walls goes a long way toward creating an ornate visual statement. Let’s change those old photo frames and experiment with their placement to create a feature wall that instantly attracts the eye.

The paradox of old, weathered wall hangings can make an intense statement in an intimate environment. Large prints of classic artworks, vintage posters, or block-colour artworks will look at home in your lush space. Antique shutters, doors and ladders against walls create simple, rustic hangings.

Care to show off your creativity? For the bathroom or bedroom, collect patterned tiles or old plates and get artistic by arranging an eclectic mix to place on walls.

3. Reflect your style

We love used mirrors. After all, as long as the mirror itself is intact (and you’re not buying seven years bad luck), a second hand, naturally aged frame has the type of character that tells a story. Try your local community second-hand sales to find an item with that rustic, antique look.

If you’re not happy with quality of the frame, restyle it using fabric from your local op-shop or textiles store. Alternatively if you find a gorgeous frame with a tainted mirror, you can ‘fake it till you make it’ by spraying the glass with ‘mirror effect’ spray paint.

If you’re after something a little more sleek and clean, simple-framed oversized mirrors don’t cost an arm and a leg nowadays. And what an incredible statement they make, especially in a darker room where a large reflective surface can help you retain a spacious feel and practical luxe design.

4. Prints and patterns

Bargain prints and patterns can be found in any department store or homewares retailer. Play around with upholstery designs, wall hangings and the shapes of homewares to create unique textures and vivid designs. Don’t forget to pay attention to the details to create the ideal luxe by design room.

For easy artworks, cover old canvases with fabric and you can even add your own touch by painting over the top. Macramé wall hangings are as simple as buying rope and a wooden pole to hang it from. All you need then is to watch DIY macramé videos on YouTube to master the art.

5. Throw away the old

The biggest change in a home can be the simplest of objects. Throw cushions, rugs and linen can make a striking change to how each room looks. Try in-season colours and for a well needed facelift, make sure you steer away from the tones and patterns you used previously.

Make your own brand-new luxe by design cushion covers by getting discount fabrics and sewing them in a simple square or rectangle. The advantage to DIY facelifting is you can incorporate the same fabric pattern into everything from cushions to wall art to the top of your table.

To give a table top a new lease on life, carefully place a layer of your favourite fabric or arrange a collection of pictures on the coffee table. Place a glass table top as the final layer and hey presto! Your old table becomes brand new.

Using these five steps is a lot more fun than splurging on one massive feature item. Not only that; it’s also a way of adding your signature style to rooms while helping you develop a better understanding of the relationship between colour, materials and patterns.

Before you buy that $10,000 sofa, it’s worth experimenting with these techniques. Try to make a visual statement with practical luxe design …without crying over your next bank statement!

It’s official. Ultra Violet is Pantone 2018. If we’re honest, we were a bit intimidated that such a bold combination of purple and violet would be the hue we’d be working into designs for the next 12 or so months. It’s not an simple one. It’s easy to overdo, (in fact, nearly impossible to underdo), but one look at Beyonce, AKA Sasha Fierce, rocking this ultra fierce purple-violet hybrid, our hope was restored.

Afterall, Ultra Violet represent the future. It represents Space travel and all of the amazing technological advances that have enriched our lives presently and will continue to do so at a rate of lightning-fast speed.pantone ultra violet 2018

So without further ado, here is our field guide to working Pantone 2018’s Ultra Violet into your digs to start 2018 off on the right foot and completely on-trend.

Dare we say it, this colour may have the longevity to grace our spaces for years to come

1. Artwork

claude monet painting pantone 2018

Water Lilies, Claude Monet, circa 1915 – 1926

It is said that Claude Monet was among the very small group of humans who can actually see the colour Ultra Violet in its truest form, a trait mostly reserved for bees, butterflies and other non-human species.

Working a small classic replica of Monet’s Water Lilies into your space does not have to feel antiquated, especially if it’s paired with other edgy and modern pieces. And the reverse is true with more modern art composed of the zeitgeist colour when coupled with classic or even whimsical pieces.

Hunt down artworks that boast the Pantone colour or better yet, create your own. Artworks are easily replaced in a home and can be used in rotation depending on your mood, occasion or season.

If you’ve been meaning to make time to let art influence and inspire more of your daily life, let this be your cue to visit more art museums in the new year and even hit up the gift shops.

You can often find small prints that are perfect for small frames to add interest to a vignette or larger pieces that truly make a statement.

2. Feature Wall

pantone 2018 study room

Get to work and revamp your living space completely by using the colour on your very own walls. Find contrasting and complementary colours to surround a feature wall and have one wall shine with Pantone’s colour of the year.

We always recommend putting together a mood board and colour scheme before starting any major re-decorating scheme and this one is no exception. You can definitely nail this look, but proper planning and a willingness to try a few different combinations is essential. If you need some help pulling together a mood board, check out our Pantone 2017 Shop the Look style board for inspiration and key elements to include before changing your space.

3. Soft furnishings and Lighting

It’s shopping time! During the release of the Colour of the Year, department stores will be filling up with the luscious tone. Cushions, rugs, throws, duvets and drapery are inexpensive and practical ways of incorporating a little or a lot of the colour into your interior style.

Pantone Pendant

Try to find light pendants in the colour. This will create an illusion of a taller space in your living room or master bedroom as it guides the eyes up to the ceiling. The Pantone shop even sells an Ultra Violet pendant that could really illuminate a kitchen bench.

An armchair or ottoman in the a shade of the colour will add a beautiful non-intrusive touch to an already well-styled home. Try re-upholstering an old armchair to give it new life this season.

If you’re not certain of Ultra Violet’s place in your heart and home in the foreseeable future, or if you prefer your statement colours in small packages, there are several other homewares that will inject the colour into your abode without the risk of overwhelming it.

The Pantone website offers everything from furniture to coffee machines. Bonus points for going equal parts luxe and on-trend for incorporating an Ultra Violet Agate desk clock into your aesthetic.

4. Foliage

Finally, an affordable and temporary solution to including Pantone 2018 in your home. Pay a visit to your local florist and get your hands on some seasonal foliage in the colour. You’d be surprised of how many flowers and plants can be found with violet.

We think a native bouquet of Austral Indigo, Hydrangeas, Callistemon ‘Purple Splendens’ and Buddleia Black Knights could be the most perfect Ultra Violet flower arrangement in the history of flower arrangements. If you are one of those people who think metallics were so last year, or have just been too scared to place a big chrome pendent in your modern home, then look no further, this article will help you see chrome in a new light.

The current electric trend in interior design is adding brass, copper or gold accessories around the home to give a bold personality. These metals may give an exciting look to your interior but the style can fade out as quickly as summer does. Chrome on the other hand is more hard wearing for homewares and fittings and can match with any interior decor, whether it be Scandinavian, contemporary, vintage or a mix.

Chrome can be incorporated by accessories, fixtures, furniture, mirrors or even on the wall. The concept of a chrome wall may make you gasp, however it can match perfectly with a modern living room…we promise!

1. Fixate on your fixtures

Chrome tap fixtures are durable, stylish and go perfectly in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. The sleek, shining silver creates a neat and tidy look even when covered in clothes or dirty dishes! Stone such as marble, slate and limestone match perfectly with chrome. Don’t be afraid to add chrome light fixtures as these can create a masterpiece in  the room, or complement more subtle chrome tap fixtures and accessories. Opt for one large statement piece or a fixture that has multiple smaller hanging lights.

2. Fabulous furniture

When we talk about chrome furniture we don’t mean a completely chrome chair that will blind you every time you look at it! It’s usually part of the base structure of the furniture. Chrome furniture is becoming increasingly popular and adds a touch of elegance and bold statement to ordinary objects such as tables and chairs. There are even bed frames that use chrome as a dominant material and these blend well with a modern style bedroom. Chrome can have many different finishes, so if shiny silver isn’t your cup of tea, then opt for a matte finish. The general rule is cool metals (such as chrome), mix well with cool colours such as blue and green.

3. Make your walls shine

Before you skip this section because it seems too bold for you, this photo may just change your mind!

Chrome walls aren’t all that scary and they can make a small room feel ten times bigger. Also an ideal option for kitchens as they hide dirt well. Using a patterned chrome wall, creates a more subtle look, instead of having one big block of shiny chrome. As this will be your statement piece there’s no need to go over the top with colourful accessories and bright materials. Keep it natural with wood, stone and minimal decorating to avoid creating a busy room.

4. Accent accessories

If you’re using chrome fixtures, as a wall or as the main statement for the room, then you don’t need to go over the top with chrome accessories. Small bedroom decorating ideas can include a few chrome candles, vases, lamps or clocks. A few accessories help guide the eye from the statement piece, around the rest of the room. Mirrors or photo frames with chrome frames are also a great way to fill in gaps on your wall, while creating an elegant look.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it’s a time to reach out and support Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon campaign. Whilst the flowers are blossoming and life feels a little brighter at this time of year for most of us, unfortunately in 2017 there were 17, 586 new cases of Breast Cancer in females. There is a 1 in 8 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer for females and a 1 in 715 chance for males. It is not all bad news though. With the revolutionary medicines we have today, the mortality rate for breast cancer continues to drop.
In the spirit of the month, we’d love you to bring some blush to your home, so here our our pink interior decorating ideas:

1. Kitchen designs

Bring your kitchen to life with pastel pink appliances. They make a subtle statement while sticking to a modern theme. Smeg coloured fridges are a popular trend and they come in a beautiful pastel pink. You can also complement this with a pink toaster or kettle or even utensils. As for the kitchen table, pink placemats go perfectly with white, timber or glass tables.

2. Living room designs

Make a statement in your living room, with a pastel pink feature sofa. Pink seating may seem like something you would put in your 5 year old’s room, but you would be surprised by just how popular they are these days. They can be easily styled in a neutral coloured room and blend well with cool greys. Add little dabs of pink around the room such as a rug, cushions or rose gold accessories and you have yourself a grown up version of a princess wonderland.

3. Bedroom designs

If you really don’t know where to start adding pink into your bedroom design, the easiest place is the bed covers. A plain pastel pink will match just about any style, but if you’re feeling more adventurous check out Designbx’s pink bedhead. Match this with marble, grey, white or light timber coloured furniture and accessories. If you are looking for for master bedroom decorating ideas, armchairs are in vogue. Don’t forget the lighting! Try rose gold, white or pink lamps or shades and take a look at Designbx’s Copper and Blush lamp or Pink pendant shade. As for accessories, try pictures and wall hangings that incorporate pinks or add some life into the room with a vase of flowers.

For interior decorating that’s a bit more quirky and personalised, try pink neon lights to hang on your wall.

4. Study designs

The study is a place where you want to feel comfortable, inspired and productive. Interior design can have a big impact on how we feel, but by adding pink furnishings into your study area, it helps to create a welcoming cosy environment. Pink wallpapers create a great backdrop for a desk and can be styled with black, marble and rose gold. Light timber desks are also trending and can be coupled with pink and marble accessories such as a real (or fake) vase of flowers.. For the more courageous designer, try pink curtain drapes around the window.

To support Breast Cancer, Designbx are pledging to donate $50 per PINK item purchased from our Shop the Look range of products to Cancer Council during the month of October.  If you still want to make a difference, but don’t want to bring pink into your home, you can donate directly. There’s no doubt fashion has often been the leader in pattern, colour, and creative trends. This is the time of year when the eyes of the fashion world turn to Australia for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, showcasing top local designers. We’re sure this year’s featured talent will impress the international fashion community once again, and inspire all creatives, including interior designers.

But since launching Designbx, we’ve been seeing the gap between fashion and interior design trends close. The lag between runway and retail stores is diminishing, and more recently we’re seeing the clothing and interior design industries running side by side.

Has social media been a player in this? It’s hard to deny the influence of its reach and immediacy. As soon as a fashion launch takes place, images and videos are shared across social media and exposed to the masses (designers and customers alike) to review, share, and comment on. It’s not only Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat. The traditional heavyweights like Facebook and Twitter are rapidly improving our ability to publish multimedia. This has created a fast-track for trends.

Designbx_Fashion7

According to Gretchen Aubuchon-founder of fashion & Decor, “The brands in fashion and home decor are now hearing the same things, at the same time and therefore not really influencing each other.”

Never before have these worlds been more in tune with each other. They’re neck and neck in the race to generate fashions. As an example, interiors catapulted ikats back into the design world and the fashion industry soon followed, deconstructing this trend and making the technique its own. The fashion industry returned the favour by forging the modern use of watercolour applications, bleeding colours and tones to create motion and fluidity.

Designbx_Fashion2

More than ever, customers are influencing designers. Increasingly educated, enthusiastic and actively involved in this space through social media, the customer’s feedback on posts, reaction to cross-testing and personal style, fuel the imaginations of designers. There are people out there, just being who they and unknowingly influencing the industry’s mindset.

The cookie-cutter approach has no place in anymore and people are confidently expressing their personal style.

Designbx_Fashion4

It’s great to see people stepping away from the beige coloured interior catalogues that shaped their interiors for many years, and embracing their own style. I feel it’s as simple as customers starting to dress their homes with the same personality they dress themselves. It’s here that fashion and interiors are becoming joined at the hip.

Rather than being force-fed styles, people are embracing the shapes, colours and textures that make them happy. With happiness comes individuality and change.

In the evolution of this encouraging development, the colour-blocking trend was a great stepping stone for many. This lead to the opposite style: a pattern wonderland that presented an array of choices, from florals to polka dots, stripes, and botanicals.

Designbx_fashion5

Image Reference

As the expression of consumers ended the established dictatorship of designers and created a more inclusive environment, traditional roles and stigmas disappeared. Now designers are happy to seek inspiration from any source, as long as it leads to stunning, creative results.

This cross pollination of ideas isn’t limited to fashion and interior design. Ombre (a resurgence of traditional techniques) not only hit these industries by storm, but was lead by the hair styling industry.

While Scandi influences, with bleached and pastel colour-ways and geometric overtones, still have a place in the design world, it’s an interior design style that is slowly being deconstructed to build new combinations. It’s the detail that counts, as fabric construction, colour and style is relayed to surface finishes in the interior space with great success. What came first, and who did it first? The origins of this new interpretation are as blurred as they’ve ever been, but hey, it’s working.

Designbx_Fashion3

Image Reference

Interior mags are using fashion and models within their lifestyle shots, fashion houses are curating homewares ranges, and designers from both industries are joining their design superpowers to try and break through with something completely new!

Society at large is as educated and powerful as it’s ever been. In this melding pot of design, the playing field has changed, and I love it!

A great area rug can make a room – size, colour, and material choices need to be considered carefully, as do pattern and weave. We’ve compiled our top tips on how to style rugs.

Rug materials

There is a lot of uncertainty in the world today and this has marked a move towards increased social responsibility. This year will see more and more rugs woven from sustainable and natural yarns. Jute, Hemp and Linen will remain popular, whilst the use of fabric remnants from other industries, such as denim and tee-shirt fabrics, will become more and more commonplace.

Layering rugs in different combinations of these materials is an easy way to add texture, depth and warmth to your space.

There has also been a move away from the mass produced – we are once again embracing bespoke and hand made items, lending support to artisan makers. Handwoven rugs with chunky large loop piles will become more and more common.

Rug colours

In terms of colour, monochrome, naturals and tone on tone styles continues to be popular choices, with the introduction of jewel colours, earthy tones, and of course lots of green (thanks to Pantone naming Greenery their colour of the year!) Again, layering different sized rugs in a variety of tones and textures will add instant warmth and depth.

Rug patterns

The Oriental rug has enjoyed regular resurgences in popularity, and will continue to be popular the coming year, as will the tribal style, vintage distressed-look rugs that look so great in boho style spaces. Classic patterns will be re-imagined in modern ways, with the use of material and colour.

There is a move away from the geo patterns we have seen everywhere in the last few years, towards natural organic shapes and lines. Increasingly, we will see rugs as pieces of art, woven in ways that emulate artistic techniques – think brush strokes, watercolour, and re-creating actual images such as portraits and landscapes.Watercolour Rug - Rug Trends 2017Image Reference

Rug sizes

Rug size is entirely dependent on the room, and as such there are no clear trends for this – however it has become increasingly common to find rooms with several smaller and medium sized rugs, in varying sizes, tones, patterns and weaves, layered to add depth and texture. When opting for just one rug, however, it is important to consider the size of the rug in relation to furniture size and placement. Below is an easy guide for your information.

How to style rugs

Despite how minor it seems, rug placement does accentuate a room when it is the right size and placement in accordance with furniture. It has the ability to make a room feel spacious, and inviting no matter the occasion or type of room. An aesthetically pleasing space aids in achieving a flowing design. Here are some tips and images to aid in your own rug placement.

Living Room

In a living area, size matters with rugs; it can overcrowd a room or even make it too spacious. A rug has to be large enough to cover all ground with couches sitting fully on it, or partially, as displayed above. In the case of smaller rugs, seating needs to be at an even distance. That principle also applies to circular rugs, as displayed below.

Dining Room

Rugs under dining tables are best around 60 to 70cm wider in dimensions in proportion to the table and chairs. This will enhance the shape of the table, ensuring the rug complements perfectly.

How to style rugs can be easily mastered following these guidelines, however as with all interior design trends there’s always room to experiment. Try partnering with a colour stained dressed timber for a unique look.

How colour affects us

Colour, in all its full spectrum of glory, is one of the most powerful tools we can utilise in the interior design world. It has the power to lift and liven our mood, just as it can calm and subdue us. Most of us will have a favourite or several favourite colours, yet have probably given little thought as to why. You can pretty much be assured that the colours we are drawn to, on some subconscious level, invoke certain feelings or emotions within us. As Claude Monet once said, “Colour is my daylong obsession, joy, and torment”…and there is plenty of science out there to back it up.

Interior design tips: Using colour

When you start thinking along these lines you get a sense of how important it is to choose the right colours when decorating your home, even if you are not drawn to bright punchy colours.

This year one of the main colour trends is ‘Muted’. We may see a similar trend every year, but there are subtle changes. In 2017 we will see blush, beige and camel replace grey as the ‘New Neutrals’, although there will always be a place in any muted interior design scheme for greys and whites.

Neutrals have had a bad rap in the past, having been labelled boring, cold, unimaginative…you get the picture. But done in the right way, a neutral colour palette in your home can be absolutely beautiful.  This decor scheme will create a sense of calm, serenity and warmth, all without the use of the typical ‘warm’ colours we associate with a cosy interior.  Bearing this in mind, this palette would work really well in living areas and bedrooms.

Neutral interiors do not need to be flat and un-inviting – there are so many ways other than just using bold colour to make a space interesting and warm.  Layering a variety of neutral shades in lots of different textures will add incredible depth and warmth to any room.

Take the layering effect to the next level by embracing another interior trend for 2017. This involves layering rugs of different textures and sizes.

Textiles in natural fabrics such as leather, linen, wool and jute look great in these colours. Woods are better in light to medium tones, maintaining a balanced calm feel.

There is a big shift away from mass production this year and towards the more artisanal pieces. Ceramics such as lamp bases and decorative pieces will look great if textured or ‘unfinished’.

To add more interest you can include items picked up on your travels such as a leather Moroccan pouffe, or add some playfulness with a fluffy Mongolian lambswool cushion.

It’s no surprise why fruit salads are one of the most popular dishes shared social media sites. The rich, natural pigments of colour seen in açaí bowls, grazing tables and fruit salads are undeniably beautiful, so why not use a fruit by design colour trend that nature provides as inspiration for your home décor?

Each fruit usually offers more than one colour that we can incorporate in interior design. Thanks to mother nature (the design O.G.), we can take our cues from the colour combinations of a fruit’s protective outer skin and the juicy flesh. Let’s not forget the many shades of green that accompany or nourish these fruits in the wild.

For those that are excited about a more literal take on a fruit salad theme, there are breathtaking selections of fruit salad inspired  furnishings that are fun additions to any space.

1. Wallpaper

Not only limited to a kid’s room, fruit-inspired wallpaper is suitable to adding that pop of colour to a neutral-toned room. Following the colour trends seen in Miami-style and retro interior design, this pineapple wallpaper is tangy and stylish to suit everyone’s tastes. Bright, pastel colours work brilliantly when championed with a neutral backdrop.

2. Linen

It’s hard to say that many kid’s don’t enjoy fruit. Including fruit prints in your kid’s linen will create a timeless look they’ll take a while to outgrow. Feminine looks include strawberry and cherry designs, where as masculine looks can be anything from bananas to oranges. Fruit prints are a great way to complement colour schemes and add a quirky spin on bedroom interior design

3. Soft furnishings

Whether you’re styling a themed party or kid’s play room, fruit by design furnishings are a sure fire hit. Multicolours that are beautifully balanced together are fun and vibrant, perfect for a child’s bedroom. Matched with deep and dark greens, fruity coloured tones pair perfectly with the outdoors and darker settings. If you’re seeking a fun twist to an outdoor design, fruit cushions are proof that our love of fruit-inspired palettes doesn’t wane after our childhoods are over.

4. Wall Prints

Even though most fruits are bright and bold, when the colours are toned down, they can still be just as beautiful. Mature colours of the fruit rainbow, such as berry reds, apple greens and tangerines, can complement a space perfectly and even add a sense of sophistication!  Try using lemon yellows for that adventurous and energetic burst of colour into a room.

As far as we’re concerned, if it’s good enough for nature, it’s good enough for us. If you want a space that feels fresh and vibrant, look no further than the sweetest things growing on our planet. Keep your interiors healthy this season with some lively, fruity patterns and colour trends found on inspirational fruit by design style boards.

The Easter Bunny has a long history going all the way back to Germany in the 1500s when children were told a magical egg-laying hare would deliver coloured eggs to their home. We’ve got a feeling that idea may have happened late at night during Octoberfest, yet this fantastic concept took off, and the bunny soon become a cultural icon.

Children would lay out nests for their eggs, and carrots for the bunny, with the hopes of extra treats. Why wouldn’t bribes work on a bunny? Cookies worked for Santa, right? From humble beginnings, this fatastical hare’s influence has spread across the world, becoming an intrinsic part of every childhood. The bunny trumps the Tooth Fairy and runs a close second to Santca.

Here in Australia we celebrate Easter much the same as the rest of the western world, by putting out coloured eggs, eating lots of chocolate and family feasting. But while the holiday in the US and Europe marks the ushering in of spring and some much-needed reprieve from a cold winter, Down Under it’s a bit different.

After a record-breaking hot summer, most of us are eager for Autumn and all the cosiness associated with the season. Fashion and design trends go hand in hand with any seasonal change, and this Autumn is no different. This Easter, we’re loving the idea of deep reds to celebrate the holiday. Fortunately for us, there’s a lot of beautiful ruby red homewares and furniture out there to tickle our collective fancy. Rich velvets, gold framework furniture and deep red botanical flowers highlights.

Ruby red is an indulgent colour, exactly what this season calls for. Think dark chocolate, melty cheese and red wine. As we’ve noted before, red used in its pure form can induce anxiety, speed and hunger (those fast food marketers are no fools), but earthy reds are great for areas where we want to relax, socialise and of course, indulge.

The tradition of dying eggs is seeing a comeback. To dye Easter Eggs in this seasons trend jewel toned colours, like Ruby Red, use brown eggs instead of white. Here’s a guide to create the perfect ruby red Easter egg.
