So here is a sneak peak at what brings a smile to the faces of Designbx founders Kylie Pratt and Kerena Berry – when they’re not busy styling for everyone else…

What makes Kylie feel at home
  1. Jewellery. The bigger, the bolder, the better. I always lose expensive jewellery so this using more affordable ‘on trend’ accessories really helps my wallet! I love that I can change a whole outfit or look simply by adding some beautiful vibrant touches by way of jewellery. And while I may not have the ‘body shape’ for designer fashion, I can so easily add my unique touch with some big leopard earrings!
  2. Shoes. High heels always make me feel great, and fit! The right shoes can make or break an outfit for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for comfortable flats as much as the next gal, but a pair of power heels can give you an instant shot of confidence.
  3. Eyebrows and hair. You just can’t have a good day with one and not the other. I was born in the 80s with a mop of curly strawberry blonde hair, and had I been in my prime partying years I would have been living the dream. Instead I’m happy if I can just get a brush through my locks most days – that is a good hair day for me!
  4. Furnishings. I absolutely love natural raw textures like linen, leather and timber. They are home to me. Growing up in New Zealand I really do appreciate the natural textures that are reminiscent of the beautiful scenery I was surrounded by growing up. It’s nostalgic for me, and creating a sense of nostalgia is such a powerful design tool.
  5. TV and movies. Laughing out loud is my style. My husband and I formed our relationship on the basis of our love for TV and films from the often cringe-worthy era of the 80s. Anyone reading this who knows us well will be having a laugh-out-loud moment. We are a couple of dags who were made for each other!
  6. Music. My go to is anything that has a story and makes me feel something. I’m pretty eclectic with my music taste pre-2000, but something about the stories told through music from the earlier generations – where people had to write letters and express their love in different ways – just gets me. I’m a hopeless romantic at heart and mostly end up crying to songs in the car.
  7. Holiday destinations. I’m more of a “do it less often, but do it right” kind of girl. Boutique locations with lots of character and unique things to look at. It’s nice to dream! The memories made on holidays with loved ones – you just can’t buy that feeling.
  8. Having a tidy desk. I’m really not sure if this is a style thing, but organisation is key to getting sh*t done for me. If I feel surrounded by mess and chaos, that’s how my day will end up.
  9. Showing up on time. This is definitely a work in progress, but being on time is super stylish in my eyes. I am renowned for being late, which I’m working on – my tardiness goes against every other personality trait I have, so people are always surprised!
  10. Friends and family. Authentic, true to themselves and down-to-earth… that’s my style and why I adore my friends and family. It does sound a bit cliché, but it’s so important to surround yourself with people you love to spend time with and who make you feel empowered and positive. We’re all so time poor that we need to be super conscious about who we spend our spare time with, and I choose to spend mine with positive and loving people.

How Kerena adds some personality and pizazz to her everyday
  1. Photographs. I have them absolutely everywhere because they remind me of all the special moments and priceless people in my life.
  2. Handbags and shoes. These are a huge weakness of mine. They are those finishing touches that just ooze personal style. My absolute favourite bag is the glorious Valentino I splurged on during a trip to New York to celebrate a dear friend’s 40th birthday. Every time I pick it up I’m reminded of the amazing time we had together – some possessions just have a way of bringing back precious memories. Similarly, but at the other end of the spectrum, is the $5 vintage leather bag I uncovered at Vinnies about 15 years ago. I cost me next-to-nothing but has accompanied me on so many adventures. My favourite shoes for comfort are my Superga platform joggers; for a bit of style punch I always reach for my suede orange tassel heels; and for an in-between occasion it’s always the Valentino rockstudded flats. I could go on….
  3. Vaporisors. I have two in the house and I always have essential oils steaming away. My favourite scents at the moment are from Anjali – “Lady Indira” & “Lemon Myrtle”. Familiar and beautiful aromas are such an underrated element of design – they inspire memories, emotions and in my case create a sense of calm in the home.
  4. Fashion. I have a very eclectic fashion sense – forever torn between my inner Cairns hippie heart; my unrequited rockstar dreams; the Northern Beaches casual surf chick; and a bit of a show-pony glitter fetish! Some of my favourite brands are Chasing Unicorns, Stevie May, Ministry of Style, Sass & Bide, Deus Ex Machina, Bali Trader (I love their custom design boots), Bec and Bridge… again, I could go on!
  5. Flowers and plants. I always need one or both of these elements in and around my space; home, office, even my car (I place a fresh lavender sprig from the garden every morning in the air vents to help calm us all during the whirlwind of school drop offs). I have many plants in our family home and succulents at the office, as they’re hardy enough to survive when we’re out on shoots and working with clients.
  6. Artwork. Studying art originally, I have a real appreciation for people who delve into such raw self-expression. I’ve collected art for as long as I can remember; street art as I backpacked around the world, and slowly building a collection of artists that I have admired for years. I call them my ‘Retirement Fund’… Let’s be honest, it’s never really going to fund my latter years, but it helps ease my conscience! I’m especially partial to photographic art.
  7. Music. From the moment my head leaves the pillow to the moment it hits it again, I have music around me. I stopped TV with the children when they were young so it has filled a very big gap. It can turn any of our moods around in second and we all have a favourite tune, style and song that pulls us out of a funk and has us giggling in seconds. I couldn’t possibly make a top list of my favourite tunes, because again, my choices are eclectic – from Dolly Parton (Jolene), to Morcheeba (World Looking In), to Kings of Leon (Sex on Fire).
  8. Food and drink. I just LOVE eating, drinking and entertaining! I’m a total foodie and am also partial to a marrying vino. I’m as white, freckled and stereotypically Aussie as they come, but my taste buds are very European.
  9. Friends and family. I have lived away from my family since I was 16. And although they have often been far away, they hold such a precious piece of my heart. Having this distance from my relatives has in many ways meant my friends have become my family, and boy do I have a fabulous bunch around me! I have been so blessed to meet and build such gorgeous and inspiring friendships over my life, and I am forever grateful and will do anything to show love and support to those around me.
  10. Babies. Mine and everyone else’s! I always wanted to be a mum – I was a total baby snatcher from as early as I can remember, and still am. By 10 years of age I was the local babysitter and could have four or more children in my care on any one night. I was in heaven! I am now a mum to two gorgeous little humans, and despite all the confronting moments it brings it is truly the most rewarding part of my life and every day. Amelia is eight and Hugo is five. There isn’t a day goes by when we don’t laugh, sing, banter and try each others’ patience. But mostly we just love each other with such depth that becoming a mum has been a soul-changing chapter of my life.

Before the challenging teenager stage, comes the awkward age of being too old for unicorns and fairies but not old enough for teenage magazines and posters of rock bands. So how do you design a room for this crucial stage in your child’s life?

Tween-age interior design should be versatile, personal and timeless in nature. Fairy pictures and eggshell blues won’t make the cut. Think neutral, to give your child room to grow into their personality and style. At this awkward age, kids don’t want to be seen or treated like babies, in fact they want to be treated like an adult (although they are far off the adult stage). The interior design of your child’s room should be something they are proud to show their friends and to capture this style. Follow our top tips for a tween-agers dream room.

1. Monochromatic backdrop

It might be time to paint over those baby pink coloured walls. Instead of painting the room numerous times over the years, go for a white or neutral background to prepare the room for change. A monochromatic backdrop allows colour to pop and a blank canvas to change the feel and look of the room easily and without mess. Neutral colours adapt to any style or colour of accessories and artwork so it’s a win-win.

2. Express yourself

Ask your tween what interests them the most and try to incorporate this in temporary designs they can change as they grow. DIY canvas art is a great way to get their creativity flowing and better yet, they can paint over it again when they grow tired of the design. Instead of hanging multiple canvases, you could make the wall into the artwork. Chalk paint is hugely popular these days and allows kids to express themselves with colours and drawings.

Wall decals are also a great inexpensive investment, that can be easily removed when your kid grows out of the style.

3. Bright bedsheets

Being young is a colourful and adventurous part of life. Make sure their room isn’t monochromatic or embracing neutral tones just yet. Go crazy with bold and colourful linen that creates a changeable statement piece for the centre of the room. Your child may be growing up but there’s still an adventurous spirit in them that longs for exciting colours and patterns. Employ texture, colour and pattern into cushions also, to create an extra buzz in a small bedroom design.

4. Statement shelves

Let your kids express their styles without ruining the walls in the process. Install some shelves to house their collections, sports memorabilia, books and favourite items. Try framing favourite images or posters instead of sticking them to the walls. They aren’t teenagers yet, so those plain square bookshelves may get groaned at. Mix it up by getting creative with bookshelves. Use different shapes, colours and styles to capture your kid’s attention.

5. Ditch the desk

Most tweens think they’ll need a desk for their future studies and endeavours. The bedroom should be kept as a place to retreat, relax and hang out with friends. Try to keep the desk in the study or living space and create a space that your tween will look forward to come home to. Replace the space with a pull-out couch or bean bags for when friends come over. Make the space inviting with cushions, rugs and colourful accessories. If there isn’t space for a hang out area, try a low to the floor bed.

6. Swell into storage

They’ll be needing more space to store their growing wardrobes and collections…and to hide mess! Storage should be unsurpassed so invest in timeless furniture pieces such as a tallboy or install a practical built-in wardrobe that’ll see them through to their young adult life. Try using seagrass baskets for blankets and toys, that will last throughout time. Also consider a proper wardrobe fit out. Drawers, hanging, space, shoe racks, they are going to need more of everything in a small bedroom space.

7. Privacy for the pirates

As your child grows, their longing for privacy will increase. They want to feel as though their every move isn’t being watched and that they have the freedom to live their own life. Even though it is never a good sign when the kids are quiet, sometimes they simply want room to grow up. Placing veils around the bed, dividing the room with curtains or placing a hang out tent in the room, will give your child a sense of security and freedom.

Every child goes through the awkward stage, so make it easy by making the interior design suit their tween needs and take advantage of the last years left before the teenagers era.

What’s hiding in your attic? The attic usually functions as the main storage space in the house. All the memorabilia from your childhood, a dumping ground for stuff without a home or maybe even some wildlife! It’s actually a large space with unfulfilled potential. Attic conversions can transform a dead space into a functional area to match with your lifestyle. For the kids it’s the perfect hideaway and for the parents a great space to store all those toys!

Before you launch into your renovation project, there are some safety and practical issues to consider, as well as some building codes to go over to make sure everything is done by the book:

1. Building codes

There are various types of codes to look out for, but remember not every code is applicable to you and your house, it depends on the area where you live. There are different local codes in different areas, so it is best to consult with a building inspector who will advise you on the proper codes and inspections you will need. The following three are most commonly applicable ones:

  • Remodeling an attic into a living space generally requires 60 per cent of your attic space to be at least 2.4 metres high.
  • Floor joists should be up to the local codes and able to support the additional weight when the remodel is done.
  • According to the Building Code of Australia, an attic conversions must have a window and a staircase to the floor beneath.

2. Extending needed systems to the attic

Depending on the purpose of the remodel, think about which systems you want or need to extend to it. If it is going to be a children’s room or playroom then you will probably need both the electrical and plumbing systems.

When it comes to electricity, running wires to the attic should not be a problem. The only thing you have to make sure of is that your electrical panel can withstand the increased demands, and that it has enough room for more breakers.

Bathroom is not a must-have in attic conversions, especially if it is going to be a playroom. But you can always put in one, especially if you plan to turn it into a kids’ bedroom. In that case, you will need to add plumbing as well. Try to build it close to the main stack to reduce the length of the pipe.

funky attic design

3. What kind of roof system do you have?

The first thing you need to check is whether your roof is made up of rafters of trusses, because it makes a big difference to your project. If it is a conventional rafter system, then you have little to worry about. There will be enough space for your project, without any boards getting in the way. On the other hand, if you have a trussed system it will present a problem because it is unlikely that you will be able to remove any of them and realize your project. Trusses run between the roof and the floor forming triangles, they depend on each other and usually cannot be moved, but consult with an architect to be sure.

Now that you have the security and coding issues out of the way you can start designing a perfect place for your kids:

4. Lighting

There is always less light coming in the attic so it is inevitably darker than the rest of the house. Having at least one window is required by the code, but also think about adding a skylight or two. It will allow the much needed light to come in – just make sure to install it properly, figuring out the path of the sun. Installing additional windows may be a little more complicated due to the shape of the room and the roof, but creative thinking alongside a carpenter usually provides a solution.

naturally lit kids attic

5. Walls and flooring

When it comes to walls, it is important to add a lot of insulation, because during summer attic conversions can get especially warm and overheated, and, of course, you don’t want your kids to be cold during winter.

Since this is going to be a kid’s room, a playroom, then be smart when thinking about flooring. You’ll want something that is durable and easy to clean, for example laminate. It is an imitation of wood, so it looks nice and it is very easy to maintain and clean.

6. Make enough space

Make sure not to crowd the room with unnecessary furniture or decoration. It is a kids’ room and it will mostly be used for playing and having fun, so they will need as much space as they can get. With some custom built shelves or cabinets you will get some storage room as well as save some more space. Try to fit them in with the slanted ceilings, follow the lines of the roof and walls, and fill the small empty spaces where nothing else would fit.

8. Average costs of attic conversions

Creating a living space in your attic is not a small or a cheap project. It is estimated that a remodel can cost up to $60,000, so be sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. The price depends on the square footage of your attic and the scope of work that needs to be done.

Putting in windows is the most expensive part, and can be anywhere between $3,000 and 18,000. A proper heating and cooling system is right after that, with the expected budget of at least $6,000. You can save some money on certain things that you can do yourself, such as insulation, but make sure to always choose quality over saving a few dollars.

Are you ready to get rid of the winter blues and bring colour back into your home for Spring?

It’s that time of year again; when we realise how cluttered our house is, from items that have been stacking up all winter. This can especially be seen in our kids bedrooms. Who knows what long lost items can be found under beds, in secret hiding places or in the depths of the cupboard.
Here are a few 2017 Spring trends that provide kids bedroom ideas for your little treasures. Also find out about all new toys set to hit the shelves this season:

1. Grey is the new white

Grey is becoming the coolest colour of 2017. It’s neutral yet versatile, meaning it can be perfectly paired with any accessory colour and matches any style. You can’t go wrong!
The first thing that will pop into a kid’s mind is ‘boring’ BUT simply add bold coloured accessories, bed covers, toys, and rugs to bring the room alive. It becomes a colourful playland for them, excites the imagination and doesn’t ruin the style of the house. For ideas on how to add colour into a kid’s room, head to Designbx’s Incy Nursery.

What’s new?
Allow your kids to personalise their room with the brand new Knot-a-Mermaid set, hitting the shelves this Spring. It enables kids to make their own fleece blanket designs and is only $27.

2. Wallpapers rise up again

Wallpapers were almost extinct, but their popularity is on the rise again. We’re not talking about the old floral designs that your grandma still has in her house, there are several new modern wallpapers that can fit perfectly with a modern home.
Geometric prints go with a simple modern style, whereas large modern florals make a statement, especially for Spring.
Try covering just one wall in wallpaper to make it a feature wall. If you then fall in love with the look, you can continue to do the rest of the room.

Wallpaper featuring wildlife, plants or flowers can be utilised in nurseries to give the room a peaceful, relaxing and natural feeling. Hopefully encouraging consistent long, deep sleeps!

What’s New?
Instead of wallpapers, you can surprise your kid with a Skyrocket Jurassic World Virtual Reality set, where they can escape reality and immerse themselves. in a dinosaur experience. At only $60, you will want to get your hands on one of these.

3. Liven up the ceiling

So often, our go-to colour for ceilings is plain, old, boring white. How many kids get excited and inspired by a plain white ceiling? Not many (if any at all). There’s no rule to say you can’t go beyond the four walls and design a ceiling that knocks their socks off.
Get your creative cap on and start your roof masterpiece, but don’t worry if painting isn’t your strong point, there are plenty of other options.
Wallpapers can seamlessly go from your walls to your roof and if you’re after something not so permanent, decals are easy to apply and change.
Try geometric patterns, polka-dots, plants, birds or clouds on either the walls ceilings or both.

4. Adventure awaits

We all know kids love adventure, whether it be searching amongst the gardens in the backyard or creating an adventure of their own at the playground. So it’s no surprise that adventure themed kids rooms have become a must have this year. You can be bold and courageous, by incorporating ropes, rock climbs, ladders and swings into your kids room, but let’s be honest, it’s not super practical! Creating a subtle adventure theme can be as easy as decal stickers of mountains, forest wallpapers or building a teepee for kids to make into a secret hideaway.

5. Wall hangings are weaving their way in

Textured woven wall hangings bring a slight boho feel to the room. If you really are struggling to find one that fits your kids room, then you can always create your own as an activity! Add some feathers, braids and macrame and you have yourself a masterpiece. They are supposed to be rustic and authentic so don’t stress if yours isn’t the finest of the bunch. The kid’s will love it!
TIP When creating a wall hanging, always keep a style board handy so you stick to the style of the room and don’t go to crazy. You can find example style boards in Designbx’s Shop the Look.Neutral nursery theme

What’s New?
While you’re busy creating a work of art, keep the kids busy making their own creation. Play Doh is launching their Touch Shape to Life Studio this Spring. Kids simply create a Play Doh character, place it in the studio and scan it to a phone, using the app, to see their creations come to life.

6. Let them draw on the walls

What better way to let a kid’s imagination run free, then to let them draw on the walls, literally. Instead of scrubbing texta off the walls, apply chalk paint to all, half or some of the kids room. They can go crazy on the chalk paint and it will distract them from the rest of the house…

7. Who needs seats

Pouf cushions are replacing seats in kid’s rooms. They are especially popular with kids because they are not only a seat but a thing to climb, but something to roll on, jump on and hide behind. They come in all different shapes, colours and sizes and such a simple thing can bring excitement to an inquisitive little mind. Your kids will wear out before the pouf does.

8. Fairy lights

Fairy lights aren’t only for girl’s rooms, there are various different styles and colours that can lighten any room up. Drape them across the bed end, along the roof, across dressers or around window seals. Plus they keep away the monsters at night.

9. Space-saving beds

Whether you fold them, roll them or hide them under the flooring, space saving beds are becoming a common occurrence in kids rooms. Traditionally, a bed takes up most of the bedroom floor space, but with tuck away beds, kids can get the best of both worlds. A huge playspace during the day and a cosy bed at night.

10. For the new family member

Designing a nursery is an exciting task, but it’s easy to go over the top. Remember they don’t need a nappy change table for long, so only keep the necessities in the room. You don’t want to be tripping over toys (that your newborn can’t even play with yet). Cribs, change tables, nappy bins and especially arm chairs are the basics you should have. Arm chairs are a timeless piece of furniture and even after your little one has grown to big to be nursed, it can hold all your memories. Keeping the design and colour simple will allow for the chair to stay in the family home forever.

For a timeless arm chair head to Designbx’s Nursery.

It’s hard to believe that spring has come around once again, and it’s time for a huge clean out and tweaking of the home design to give that summer vibe. Kid’s playroom designs can be the hardest to tackle. You want the area to be fun and colourful so your kids have somewhere to let their imaginations run free, but on the other hand you don’t want the room to stick out like a sore thumb because it doesn’t flow with the design of the home.

Why not chose a pirate theme for your modern day little pirate?
A pirate theme can be moulded to fit on with a modern home, yet still keep the kids entertained. It can be their own little escape into a different world and you can easily shut the door and forget about the mess. It’s also the perfect solution to keeping that coastal feel throughout the house.

Style boards are a great help when deciding on designs and themes for your spring home. It can be tricky to start designing a pirate room as you want it to inspire your little ones but how do you go about that? Designbx’s pre-made style boards can point you in the right direction.

1. Stripes

You can easily transform your kids current room into a pirate playland, by simply incorporating black or navy stripes. You can go all out and cover the wall or floor in striped wallpaper or be more subtle and include striped accessories, paintings, rugs and bed covers. Try this reversible quilt cover that is both modern and fits with a pirate theme.

2. Accessories

Always remember that any accessory placed in a kids room, is going to be used for something it wasn’t intended for. So be careful where you place the accessories and check the quality of them. Sailing ships, telescopes and steering wheels create the perfect combination for your little pirate to embark on a sailing journey through the seas. After playtime is over, simply hide away the evidence in pirate themed storage containers. This can be treasure chest toy boxes or coastal themed baskets. Pictures and paintings can also add to the nautical theme such as this seawood artwork.

3. Bedding

When your pirate gets back from their big adventure, they will need a bed made for a pirate. Pirate ship shaped beds can make bedtime more inviting. Hopefully helping to avoid the before-bed-tantrums! Although, there are plenty of other ways to turn an ordinary bed into a pirate resting area. Nautical quilt covers are modern and still inviting. Try pottery barn kids’ pirate ship or anchor quilt covers. Also don’t forget to keep the nasty sea creatures away with some bedside table lights. Designbx’s retro lamp is the perfect addition to a pirate’s room, or a pendant shade for even more lighting.

Listen up, me hearties! Get yee an eye patch, a pirate hat, a wooden leg (please don’t remove the real one), and get ready for a crash course on one of our favourite days of the year. It’s International Talk Like A Pirate Day!

We’ll even offer a few tips to make your home the perfect pirate haven. Yes, even the dirtiest, salt-caked seafarers had to spend a little time at home, and yee can be sure they went for a coastal theme.

So how did this day become such a worldwide hit? Well it certainly helps that it’s been used as a major fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Support (one of our favourite causes) but its beginnings were very humble.

When two lads decided to encourage each other to get fit, they started using pirate slang. Soon the in-joke spread so widely that the duo became known as ‘those pirate guys’. They soon hatched a scheme to make the day official, and with the help of Dave Barry, a comedian and columnist, the concept went viral.

Suddenly Facebook was turning its site into a pirate themed design, astronauts celebrated on the International Space Station, President Obama appeared with a costumed buccaneer and Krispy Kreme gave away doughnuts to anyone willing to speak like a pirate.

Living in a country girt by sea, we think it’s fair to take the theme a step further, especially when the Coastal style is already a big hit among Designbx fans.

1. Go oar out

We absolutely love Coastal/pirate themed wall art. It’s not only aesthetically charming but also unlocks the imagination, helping us dream of faraway continents and distant adventures. Anchors, oars and sea sculptures never lose their appeal. Timeless classics.

2. Take to the high seas

If you want to see a kid stand in one position without moving for at least an hour, try a map design for wallpaper. Vintage wallpapers and oversized maps transport any imaginative person to a dream state. Beautiful, classic, hypnotic.

3. Roll out the barrels

No self-respecting pirate wants to sit in a plush velvet chair, drinking from fine china. Roll out those barrels, and while you’re at it, empty the grog into some large recycled jars. Let’s get this pirate party started!

4. A boatiful vintage look

While the more illustrative and decorative touches provide obvious ocean connotations, it’s the rustic finishes that provide a more subtle and beautiful coastal feel. Think: weather driftwood, rope-style woven rugs, glass bottle accessories and sea creature detailing.

5. Create long-lasting pirate memories

Pirates have hearts too (usually black), so get creative with the presentation of your cherished memories. Nets and ropes are fun ways to mount your snapshots and sentimental items.

6. Go coastal zen

Try this subtle touch of the coast with nautical elements incorporated, or just go with a coastal style. Coral and blue are tonal soul mates, and they work perfectly to project the theme. Provide a little pop with art prints, and a beautiful feature lamp on a rattan side table. Pinks, corals, blues and neutrals work fantastically to complete the perfect palette. Actually we might think twice about letting a dirty pirate into this room!

So get ready to talk the talk, walk the peg-legged walk, and inject a little ocean spray into your interiors. And when it comes to International Talk Like A Pirate Day, give generously to not-for-profit organisation Childhood Cancer Support.

And remember the 4 A’s:

Ahoy! (Hello)
Aye (Yes, sir)
Avast! (Check it out)
Arrr! (Yep, I agree, I’m lovin’ it)

Decorating a kid’s bedroom doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style. In fact, it opens up a whole new world of exciting design possibilities, even for small spaces. It’s the perfect excuse to be as bold, brave or as magical as you want. Whether designing for a little girl or teenager, Designbx interior designer, Elise Finnerty, shares top tips on retaining the right interior design style while spoiling your favourite girl… Let the fun begin!

1… Planning and zoning.

Decorating an amazing room that grows with your child calls for creativity and clever planning. When you begin designing your child’s bedroom, it’s important to balance function, safety and style.
Consider all the activities that are likely to happen in the room. Will it also serve as a playroom or study? Is there a chance it may eventually become a room for two? Let the activities, items and colours your child loves the most be your guide when you choose furnishings and accessories. After all, it is a room for your little princess and you want them to really enjoy and utilise the space.
Will they need a chair for reading? Plenty of open floor space for blocks and games? Factor in how their interests may change and grow as they get older. Toddlers often need a play table for arts and crafts while a school-age kid may require a desk.

Make sure your plan allows for plenty of room to grow, change and evolve. For example, using a full-sized desk can work for a young child while supervised but they will also be able to use it at an older age; or you could use a shelf and adjust the height as they grow up.
I like to use timeless pieces for the functional parts of the room, and then add personality with decorative elements so you can easily switch the old for new and change the overall theme of the room to suit your child.
Plan and divide the room into activity based zones for easy flow and function.

2… Storage.

Planning adequate storage for the room is so important, not just for aesthetics but for functionality as well. You want the room to be used as efficiently as possible so let’s make it easy for your child to put things away and ensure the room is inviting, for them and you. Using appropriate storage for each zone also makes it easy for your child to find things and put them all away. Shelves, bins and baskets should be easy to access. Choose storage boxes with a lid to hide any clutter or mess. This will also eliminate distractions  when your child is using the room for homework.

Wall hooks are also a great addition for storage as they won’t take up much space. And they also offer a massive bonus by assisting your child if they like to play dress-ups.
A storage box or ottoman is great for cushions and blankets as well as toys, and it doubles as a seat too!

3… Texture, pattern and personalisation.

Whether it be a bedhead, cushion, wallpaper or bedspread, using different textures and patterns will make your little girl’s room ultra-personal and fun. Also, by keeping other décor items simple, the patterns will not only shine, they’ll also last your daughter from childhood through to her teens.

Self-expression is a part of your little one’s life, so why hide important personal items that you really like? Display a few items for further personalisation on shelving, bedsides or desks.
Try adding some fluffy and flowy elements like curtains, throws, faux hides, rugs and even canopies, to soften the room and create a luxurious ambience for your princess.

Be sure to refer to the SIDS guidelines when planning your child’s rooms, and remember: safety first.

It’s no surprise why fruit salads are one of the most popular dishes shared social media sites. The rich, natural pigments of colour seen in açaí bowls, grazing tables and fruit salads are undeniably beautiful, so why not use a fruit by design colour trend that nature provides as inspiration for your home décor?

Each fruit usually offers more than one colour that we can incorporate in interior design. Thanks to mother nature (the design O.G.), we can take our cues from the colour combinations of a fruit’s protective outer skin and the juicy flesh. Let’s not forget the many shades of green that accompany or nourish these fruits in the wild.

For those that are excited about a more literal take on a fruit salad theme, there are breathtaking selections of fruit salad inspired  furnishings that are fun additions to any space.

1. Wallpaper

Not only limited to a kid’s room, fruit-inspired wallpaper is suitable to adding that pop of colour to a neutral-toned room. Following the colour trends seen in Miami-style and retro interior design, this pineapple wallpaper is tangy and stylish to suit everyone’s tastes. Bright, pastel colours work brilliantly when championed with a neutral backdrop.

2. Linen

It’s hard to say that many kid’s don’t enjoy fruit. Including fruit prints in your kid’s linen will create a timeless look they’ll take a while to outgrow. Feminine looks include strawberry and cherry designs, where as masculine looks can be anything from bananas to oranges. Fruit prints are a great way to complement colour schemes and add a quirky spin on bedroom interior design

3. Soft furnishings

Whether you’re styling a themed party or kid’s play room, fruit by design furnishings are a sure fire hit. Multicolours that are beautifully balanced together are fun and vibrant, perfect for a child’s bedroom. Matched with deep and dark greens, fruity coloured tones pair perfectly with the outdoors and darker settings. If you’re seeking a fun twist to an outdoor design, fruit cushions are proof that our love of fruit-inspired palettes doesn’t wane after our childhoods are over.

4. Wall Prints

Even though most fruits are bright and bold, when the colours are toned down, they can still be just as beautiful. Mature colours of the fruit rainbow, such as berry reds, apple greens and tangerines, can complement a space perfectly and even add a sense of sophistication!  Try using lemon yellows for that adventurous and energetic burst of colour into a room.

As far as we’re concerned, if it’s good enough for nature, it’s good enough for us. If you want a space that feels fresh and vibrant, look no further than the sweetest things growing on our planet. Keep your interiors healthy this season with some lively, fruity patterns and colour trends found on inspirational fruit by design style boards.

From the moment we picked up our crayons as toddlers and began to imitate nature, our connection to colour has been enduring. The feelings each hue evokes are permanently etched on our subconscious minds, and whether wittingly or automatically, we use these preferences in any environment we control.

In our home or office space, colour is crucial, whether we require motivation, inspiration or calm, so let’s focus on the use of hues in interior design to boost mood and atmosphere.

White

Representing clarity, peacefulness and cleanliness, white is usually the primary palette in bathrooms. As a blank canvas, white can also promote creativity and inspiration for children.

However when used in excess, white can be stale and remove vivacity from a room. Using white as a base with pops of contrasting colours and natural textures is a great way to change the mood of a room.

Natural materials like wood, marble and plants will bring warmth and comfort to a white space while maintaining a neutral palette.

Blue

Evoking calmness and tranquillity, blue is often the top choice for workspaces. It stimulates focus and productivity. It may be a blue wall, touches of blue in interior furnishings like chairs, carpet, tiles or light fixtures, or used within branding elements logos and marketing media.

Representing the sea and the sky, blue also brings us to the solitude of the coastline, inspiring relaxation and reflection, so can also work well in a light hue within a bathroom space.

Dark blue on mass can be cold so is best mixed with a range of blue hues or as a focus colour amongst a lighter colour scheme.

Green

Usually associated with health and well being, green can be a good colour to use in bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. It’s considered the easiest colour for the human eye to process and therefore not overly stimulating. For this reason, using a light green hue in a nursery is a great gender-neutral palette to work with.

Dark green is also associated with wealth and prosperity, a strong and confident choice. When paired with blue it remains striking but with a calm overtone. Introducing green colours into a space using plants is an excellent way to bring the outdoors in, and freshen the air of your interiors.

Yellow

Bright and sunny, yellow is fun and uplifting. Using highlights of yellow in spaces like the kitchen, dining room and living areas promotes positive energy and a social atmosphere.

For a more subtle approach, opt for a muted or deeper yellow. This is commonly used in a bedroom space to enhance warmth, comfort and security.

Orange

As a colour of fire, orange makes us feel warm and alive. These sensations stimulate our brains with a boost of oxygen and can result in sociability and increased appetite. Orange is therefore a great colour to use in spaces where entertaining happens like dining areas or outdoor settings.

As a block colour, orange can become quite overwhelming so is best used sparingly and alongside contrasting colours like green, or complimentary colours like yellow or red.

Red

Most commonly known as the dynamic colour of passion, red excites and stimulates the eye. It’s a powerful colour that is associated with love and sensuality.

As a pure hue, it can create anxiety and stress so it’s important that it’s knocked back and earthy in tone when used in bedroom spaces or areas meant for relaxing and socialising.

Purple

Often used in realms of spirituality, purple is the colour of calmness and reflection. Purple also has been affiliated with nobility and royalty and can give the impression of abundance and luxury. As purple is a secondary colour, combining blue and red (depending on the hue of purple used) can dramatically change the feel of a space.

Light purples (blue based) can be calming and intimate, most effectively used in bedrooms and nurseries. Dark purples (red based) are much more intense, evoking prosperity and the illusion of expensive taste and luxury. However when used in excess, dark purple can create a heavy and negative vibe, so balance of hue and tone is crucial to maintain a positive sensation.

Black

Often used best as an accent colour, black represents sophistication and power. Having a strong association to status, it can be effective in office spaces. When used in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens or bathrooms, it does emit luxury but can be off-putting and mournful if used in heavy proportions.

As you can see, some colours are more adaptable, easily applied to a number spaces and safer to use as base or block colours. Others have a potency that can bring a space to life when used with subtlety, but can be dangerous when overused.

When it comes to deciding on a suitable colour scheme for your space, use your instinct and go for colours that you love to ensure that the space represents you and your personality. But use our guide to make sure your choices don’t result in interiors that contradict the intended mood.

Every hue on the colour wheel evokes mood and emotion, so never underestimate the positive and negative impacts of colour in interior design.
